Nigeria at 56: We will overcome challenges – Dogara

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Yakubu Dogara
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Yakubu Dogara, has facilitated with Nigerians on the occasion of the country’s 56 independence anniversary.

A statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Turaki Hassan, in Abuja on Friday said that despite the challenges confronting Nigerians,“there is every reason for the country to celebrate its independence anniversary”.

Dogara, however, noted that the current challenges were not insurmountable, adding that “with unity of purpose, commitment, sacrifice, hardwork and patriotism we shall overcome”.

The speaker, who noted that while it might seem like all was bleak and gloomy at the moment, said that “Nigerians will soon begin to smile in appreciation when fruits of the structures being put in place by the present administration begins to manifest”.

He said democracy offers nothing other than liberty and freedom for citizens to realise their God-given talents and potential which could be harnessed into building a greater society.

“As leaders, we are ever ready to make the much needed and necessary sacrifice to help take the country out of the present recession and build a strong economy.

“The House of Representatives is alive to its responsibilities and committed to passing legislation that will help take the country out of the present economic recession,’’ Dogara said.

EFCC claims to have recoverd N1.30bn

EFCC claims to have recoverd N1.30bn
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions, EFCC, said that it has recovered over N1 billion within seven months in the South-South states. The commission disclosed this in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during a protest by the Coalition of Civil Rights Organisations, Concerned Youths and the Ijaw Nation Worldwide on the probe of the former first lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

Addressing the protesters, the South-South Zonal Head of EFCC, Mr. Ishaq Salihu, noted that the amount it recovered falls into two categories, explaining that part of the money was from politicians, whereas the other was from cases reported to the commission.

Salihu said that the commission recovered over N500 million from top politicians in the region within the stipulated months. He said: “Between January 2 and September 2, alone, the EFCC South-South office has recovered N1.30 billion.

What I said can be verified, there are records on that. “The amount falls into two categories. One, recovery from the Federal Government and the state governments, and recoveries from politicians, and individuals that reported their cases to the EFCC and whose money had been returned.

“We have Recovery Account at the Central Bank of Nigeria. The last time I checked, we have recovered from politicians over N500.5m, that make up the N1bn. Nobody should justify the illegality that has been going on.”

PDP rejects Edo governorship election results.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the results of the Edo governorship election held on Wednesday, ahead of the announcement of the outcome. The party rejected the results in a press conference addressed by its Chairman in the state, Mr Dan Orbih,on Thursday in Benin.

The press conference was also attended the party’s governorship candidate in the election, Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu. Both the party and it’s candidate said they rejected the results because they were “fabricated and a pre-determined” by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Edo Government. INEC was announcing the results of the poll as at the time of filing this report. Orbih said that the results as they were being announced by the INEC, were at a complete variance with what the party got from it agents and independent observers.

He alleged that the two-week extension of the poll by the electoral body was to allow for more time to perfect the manipulation of the process. “You will recall that our state Publicity Secretary had briefed the press less than 48 hours to the elections on what is playing out now. “If you go by the results that were announced at the polling units and wards across the state, it shows that PDP would have won by over 30,000 votes. “What INEC is announcing is clearly different from what we got from our agents and independent observers in the 192 wards and over 2,000 units across the state.

“We are rejecting these results as they were being announced by INEC and we are coming out early enough to make this known,”he said. The chairman said the cancellation of some results on the basis of failed card reader was part of a deliberate plan to also manipulate the poll. He alleged that the areas were results were canceled were stronghold of the PDP. “I wonder what the Incident Form is for. Voters should not be made to suffer unduly for the inefficiency of card readers,” he said.

He said the results as were being announced by INEC, were clearly at variance with the widely acclaimed voter- turnout that was also acknowledged by the electoral umpire itself. On his part, the governorship candidate said he aligned himself with the position of the party. “The results are not a true reflection of what happened in the field. The INEC only played a script written by the Government of Edo,” he said.

She said: “I don’t know what got into me. I am learning how to make beads at Ikotun and I live with the child’s mum. I refer to the child’s mother as my sister because we are from the same community in Ghana and also live together in Ikotun. But we are not blood sisters.

“The mother did not offend me. I kidnapped her daughter because I wanted N30,000 for some personal needs. But I could not do it on my own so I invited my friend, Agatha, who sells fried potatoes at Ikotun.”

Kiriji war re-echoes after 130 years

Map of Western Nigeria
Echoes of the Kiriji war between Ibadan and Ekiti Parapos, which ended on September 23, 1886 resonated again, last week, as prominent sons and daughters of Yorubaland including traditional rulers gathered at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, to review what led to the war and the lessons the South West geopolitical zone should learn from it.

The centenary anniversary with the theme: “Celebrating Yoruba in the past, present and future”, was jointly organised by the Yoruba Academy and the Afenifere Renewal Group, ARG.

The treaty entitled: ‘The Proclamation of Peace at Kiriji-Mesan’ was signed by Henry Higgins, Oliver Smith. Among those who signed the treaty were the Alaafin of Oyo, his chiefs, Owa of Ilesa and his chiefs, Awujale of Ijebuland and his chiefs.

In attendance at the epoch-making event were representatives of Governors Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State; Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State.

Others included the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Chief Yetunde Onanuga; Secretary to the Oyo State Governor, Alhaji Olalekan Alli; chairman, Afenifere Renewal Group, Mr. Wale Oshun; Dr. Charles Akinola; Special Adviser to Osun State Governor, Architect Muyiwa Ige; son of the late sage, Chief Bola Ige; former member of International Court of Justice, Prince Bola Ajibola, and a host of others.

Edo election: Buhari calls Oshiomhole, congratulates Obaseki

Buhari calls Oshimole over Edo States Election
President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the APC candidate, Godwin Obaseki and the people of Edo on successful conclusion of the gubernatorial election in the state.

In a telephone call to Gov. Adams Oshiohmole of Edo on Thursday, the President noted with delight the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Godwin Obaseki.

He commended the well articulated campaign programme of the APC in the state, the doggedness of the governor, governor-elect and party members in going round the state to reach the people with records of good governance.

According to the president, the outcome of the election clearly reflects the mood of the people to sustain the pedigree of responsiveness, forthrightness and diligence that Oshiohmole brought into the service of his people. He said “the victory is good for democracy, for Nigeria and for the people of Edo.” The President further maintained that the victory was well deserved as the campaign train, which he joined, worked hard to sell its people-centered manifesto.

He applauded the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, corps members and the electorate in ensuring peaceful election in the state.

INEC had announced that Obaseki of the APC won majority of the votes cast in the Sept. 28 Edo poll with a total of 319,483 votes.

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the PDP came second with 253,173 votes.

18 African countries to automate online intellectual property registration

Africa Map
Following the successful trial in Kenya, the software giant, Microsoft handed over the source code for an online intellectual property (IP) registration system to IP authorities across Africa, including the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO).

The online registration system replaces the traditional manual process of submitting paper-based forms, making the registration of IP fast, accessible and more efficient. Microsoft 4Afrika is handing over the source code to an online automated IP registration system, to help IP authorities across Africa drive a culture of IP protection.

The countries within COMESA whose IP authorities will receive the source code from Microsoft include: Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

IP protection, including patents, trademarks and copyrights, are essential for small businesses to get ahead of their competitors, generate investment and ultimately bring their ideas to market. However, many innovations in Africa do not come to fruition due to of lack of knowledge about, and red tape around, registering IP.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), resident applications for patents in various African countries are still low. In 2014, there were 752 patent applications in Egypt, 132 in Kenya, 14 in Zambia and only 5 in Rwanda, compared to over 280,000 in the U.S. and 19,000 in the United Kingdom. At the same time the registration of copyright in many African states has not taken off and this data is not taken into account in economic surveys.

Edo Election: Young Democratic Party drags INEC to court

Young Democratic Party {YDP} Drags INEC to court
The Young Democratic Party (YDP) has dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to court for allegedly being responsible for its abysmal performance in the Sept. 28 gubernatorial election in Edo.

The Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mrs Evelyn Okere, made this known at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday. Okere attributed the poor number of votes scored by party to the failure of INEC to display the correct logo of the party on the ballot paper.

Mr Raphael Sebibo-Horsfall, a Board of Trustees member of the Party added that "when our members went out to vote and did not see our logo on the ballot paper, they were greatly disappointed and cried out.” He added that INEC had denied the youths in Edo an opportunity to elect their leader and it would be unfair for the commission to go ahead to announce a winner in the election. He said the party would follow all the necessary legal processes to get justice for its members.

Jibrin and two other Rear-Admirals, Bala Mshelia (rtd) and Shehu Ahmadu (rtd) before Justice A. Patience Jonathan's $31.4 million saga: She is not above the law - Timi Frank

Ex First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan
Acting National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank has asked Nigeria’s former firstlady, Dame Patience Jonathan to go clear her name before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC rather than resorting to under-hand tactics to armtwist the anti-graft agency into doing her bidding.

Frank in a statement issued Sunday in Abuja said the immediate-past firstlady is not above the law, describing as shameful, threats by a Niger Delta militant group and the protest at the Port Harcourt zonal office of the EFCC in support of Mrs Jonathan, over the freezing of her dollar account containing about $31.4 million.

Again, we should also remind those who have forgotten that a national leader of APC, who was once the vice president of this nation, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was once investigated. So, why must Mrs Jonathan’s case be different??

Boko Haram: Shekau is back again!

Abubakar Shekau boko haram terrorist leader
The Nigerian Army has reacted to the latest video footage released by factional leader of the Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau.

Reacting through its Acting Director of Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the Nigerian Army described the footage as a mere propaganda.

Usman said, “In it, the purported leader of the group in his usual insane manner made all sorts of assertions to the point of threatening various towns, groups and individuals. He also tried albeit failingly to deny the air raid by the Nigerian Air Force in which he was wounded.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to assure the public that they should not be bothered by the contents of the video clip. This is because the facts on the ground speak for themselves. It is public knowledge that the military has been making concerted efforts to clear the remnants of the terrorists and rescue all persons held hostage by them especially the abducted Chibok Secondary School girls.

Nigerians how long shall we wait??

APC is now under threat of being suffocated

Tinubu asks Oyegun to immediately resign as APC Chairman
All Progressives Congress, APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has demanded the resignation of the national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun who he claimed had derailed from the path of progressives.

In a stinking communiqué from his media office, Tinubu accused Oyegun of sabotaging the will of democracy in Ondo State by overriding the decision of the appeal panel that asked for a fresh governorship primary following investigations that showed that the delegates’ list used had been tampered with.

Tinubu in the communiqué further alleged that Oyegun’s action in allegedly subverting the will of the people was not of his doing, saying that for a man of the age of the national chairman to have done what he did that he must have been under the influence of a “powerful and sinister arm at work.”
Tinubu who said that the APC was now under threat of being suffocated by anti-democratic forces pretending to be progressives.

With strong expectation, we await a response to Oyegun’s wrongdoing from those who clamored so long and loudly about Tinubu’s alleged role in the Ondo primary.

Today in History for September 23rd

On this day in 1943, Benito Mussolini, deposed dictator of Italy, fashions a new fascist republic–by the leave of his new German masters–which he “rules” from his headquarters in northern Italy.

In July 1943, after a Grand Council vote of “no confidence,” Mussolini was thrust from power and quickly placed under house arrest. The Italian masses, who had so enthusiastically embraced him for his promises of a new Italian “empire,” now despised him for the humiliating defeat they had suffered during the war. But Mussolini still had one fan–Adolf Hitler.

An interview with Ai Xiaoming

Ai Xiaoming, 2016
Ai Xiaoming is one of China’s leading documentary filmmakers and political activists. Since 2004, she has made more than two dozen films, many of them long, gritty documentaries that detail citizen activism or uncover whitewashed historical events. Among them are Taishi Village, which recounts the efforts of farmers to remove a corrupt party secretary; The Epic of the Central Plains, which tells the story of an AIDS village in Henan province; a five-part series on the 2008 Beichuan Earthquake that focuses on the efforts of activist Tan Zuoren; and, most recently, a five-part documentary on Jiabiangou—a labor camp for political prisoners where thousands died of famine in the Great Leap Forward. Still in progress, it already totals seven hours.

The sixty-two-year-old grew up in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, daughter of Ai Renkuan, the adopted son of the Tang Shengzhi. In 1985 she moved to the capital to teach at Beijing Normal University, where she befriended many leading thinkers in China’s post-Cultural Revolution intellectual scene. In 1994, she became a professor of Chinese literature at Sun Yat-sen University in the southern city of Guangzhou, where she taught women’s studies and literature before retiring two years ago. She is the author of eight books on literature, and has translated works by Kundera.

Today in History for September 22nd

On this day in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issues a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which sets a date for the freedom of more than 3 million black slaves in the United States and recasts the Civil War as a fight against slavery.
When the Civil War broke out in 1861, shortly after Lincoln’s inauguration as America’s 16th president, he maintained that the war was about restoring the Union and not about slavery. He avoided issuing an anti-slavery proclamation immediately, despite the urgings of abolitionists and radical Republicans, as well as his personal belief that slavery was morally repugnant. Instead, Lincoln chose to move cautiously until he could gain wide support from the public for such a measure.

Governor Fayose detects Fraud in Aisha Buhari's picture with Michelle Obama

President Buhari’s Wife, Aisha tweeted her own picture with Mrs Michelle Obama at exactly 12:10am today, claiming the picture was taken at her (Mrs Obama) “broadway event about girl empowerment. Now look at the two pictures taken at two different events. Mrs Michelle Obama’s posture was the same in the two pictures. Was it that Mrs Obama was stationed like a statue to take the two pictures? Okay nah, finally finally, can we have other pictures she “took” with Mrs Michelle Obama? Or was the ASO VILLA PHOTOSHOPER (sorry photographer) who “took” the picture forbidden from taking more than ONE PICTURE?

However, Reno Omokri, former aide of Goodluck Jonathan, defended President Buhari’s wife, saying that the allegation that Aisha Buhari photoshopped her picture with Michelle Obama is false.

He added that ''People line up to take pictures with the alpha who maintains the same pose''.

ARUERA WOMEN FOUNDATION as well as the WOMEN FOR CHANGE INITIATIVE; both of which Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) substantially contributed to the 35 per cent affirmative action for women in the country. Our Client is the recipient of numerous local and international awards in recognition of her untiring commitment towards uplifting the living standard of women, children and the aged in Nigeria. “Sir, it is against this sterling and meritorious background of our client that we most respectfully, write to draw your attention to the numerous breaches of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act 2004 committed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in cause of the Commission’s illegal and unlawful investigation of our client for alleged money laundering. These investigations have reportedly led to the freeze of our client’s accounts and led to untold consequences to our client’s health and wellbeing,” the solicitor asserted. He added: “The EFCC must realize that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act 2004 is inferior in content and quality to both the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As amended) and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, 2004.”

Today in History for September 19th

New Zealand women’s first to vote in the  world.

On 19 September 1893, when the governor, Lord Glasgow, signed a new Electoral Act into law, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to grant the right to vote to all adult women. At the time this was a truly radical change: many other democracies did not allow women to vote till decades later.

The bill was the outcome of years of suffragette meetings in towns and cities across the country, with women often traveling considerable distances to hear lectures and speeches, pass resolutions, and sign petitions. New Zealand women first went to the polls in the national elections of November 1893.

The United States granted women the right to vote in 1920, and Great Britain guaranteed full voting rights for women in 1928.

Obama After Signing of U.S.-Israel Aid Deal Prods Netanyahu

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Wednesday renewed his call for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and argued that it was crucial to Israel’s security, using the completion of a new agreement to provide $38 billion in American military aid as an occasion to prod Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a long-running dispute.
Mr. Obama said the 10-year, $38 billion agreement — the most generous of its kind ever — would “make a significant contribution to Israel’s security in what remains a dangerous neighborhood.” In a statement after the deal was signed in a formal ceremony at the State Department, the president said it underscored the United States’ status as “Israel’s greatest friend and partner.”
But in a nod to his differences with Mr. Netanyahu, with whom he has clashed over the Iran nuclear deal and Israeli settlement activity, Mr. Obama also stressed the importance of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, an imperative he said was as vital to Israel’s security as the aid package itself.
